“It’s as if someone wanted to break her spirit along with her bones,” the rescuer whispered. After shattering her legs, the owner had likely driven her deep into the forest and left her there to die, unable to walk back to civilization. But they underestimated Vita’s will to live.

The surgery to repair her legs was a complex puzzle. Surgeons spent hours carefully pinning the shattered fragments back together. Even after the operation, no one was sure if she would ever walk on all fours again. But Vita, true to her name, began trying to stand on her bandaged front legs the very next day.

While Vita fought for her recovery, the authorities searched for her abuser. They checked the only security camera within 5 kilometers, but the trail went cold. Today, you can always see a happy smile on Vita’s face. She has left the darkness of the forest behind. She no longer has to walk like a human to avoid the pain; she walks like a dog who knows she is finally home. Her abuser may have broken her legs, but they failed to break her soul.
